Signs of EHV

Types of EHV and signs to look out for

By Josh Slater on 02 August 2019

The most common types of Equine Herpes Virus are EHV-1 and EHV-4.

EHV-1 can cause abortion, respiratory disease and neurological disease.

EHV-4 usually causes respiratory disease but occasionally it can result in abortion and more rarely neurological disease.

Listen to the second in our series of four essential-listening EHV awareness vlogs from Professor Josh Slater, European Veterinary Specialist in Equine Internal Medicine, to learn about the signs of EHV. Making sure you know when you may need to call your vet will help you to reduce the risks to your horse and to others on the yard. in other blogs Josh explains what EHV is, preventative strategies and what to do if you think your horse may have EHV.

Did you know?

EHV, just like cold sores, chicken pox and shingles in humans, lies dormant in the horse after it recovers from infection and will periodically recur.
